What can I expect?
A trained child and adolescent therapist understands the unique needs of young people,and strives to create a safe place for them to express themselves through talking, play, art, and other mediums.
A child therapist understands that the child is part of a family, and will provide ongoing support and training for the family.
The child therapist will, when appropriate, work with the school and other agencies on how to best support the child’s emotional health.
Most importantly, a child therapist has experience working with young people, and is educated in ways to address specific and global concerns.
What to look for
Membership under a governing body, such as NZAC, NZAP, NZACAP or PTNZ
Professional tertiary qualification in counselling, play therapy, psychology or psychotherapy
Experience working with children and adolecents
Therapist receives ongoing supervision with a child and adolescent therapist
They are engaged in ongoing professional development
